Hearing is produced when sound waves are converted into electric energy, which stimulates the internal ear nerves. Finally, the sound travels through long nerve routes up to the brain.
A slight decrease in hearing is normal after the age of 20. Hearing problems usually develop gradually and rarely end in complete deafness.
There are many causes that produce hearing loss or decreased hearing; they can be divided into 2 main categories:
· A mechanical problem in the external or middle ear. This could be caused due to the presence of liquid in the middle ear. This is known as conductive hypoacusis and it is often reversible.
· Internal ear dysfunction. This happens most frequently when the tiny pillar cells (called cilia) that transmit the sound through ear are injured. It is also known as conductive hypoacusis but, generally it is not reversible.
Common causes of hearing problems:
- Acoustic trauma
- Chronic ear infections
- Diseases of the inner ear
- Eardrum Rupture
