Podiatry

Podiatrists or chiropodists treat from feet calluses up to reconstructive surgery.

Age, as well as diseases, poor blood circulation, wrongly cut nails and the use of shoes that don't fit well can probably have some negative effect on the feet.  Feet problems can be the first symptom of any more serious medical condition such as arthritis, diabetes, circulatory or neurological disorders.

Feet diseases vary greatly depending on the age of the patients.  Young people only visits the podiatrist if they have fungi problems or calluses.  Older people need to visit the podiatrist for foot problems due to arthritis, bunions (prominent cheekbone) and other chronicle diseases such as diabetes.

Common Feet Problems:

Bacterial and Fungal Infections
Including athlete's foot, they manifests because we spend too much time with feet inside the shoes, this develops humidity and heat, which are the ideal conditions for fungi to be reproduced.  This type of infection might cause dryness, redness, blistering, peeling and irritation.  If not properly treated, the infection can recur.  To prevent infections, keep you feet clean and dry especially between the fingers.  Change shoes and socks or stockings often to help keep feet dry.  Try to use feet powder for the whole day, every day.  If feet don't improve after two weeks, ask your doctor.

Calluses

They are the result of friction and pressure made by feet when the bony areas of the feet are squeezed against the shoes.  If you have calluses or hardness, you have to consult the podiatrist.  Specially f you are diabetic or have poor blood circulation.  Non-prescribed medications destroys the tissue but don’t treat the origin of the condition, you should consult it with your doctor before using them.
